OceanHero: The Eco-Friendly Search Engine That’s Making Waves

People search the internet every day, and the OceanHero search engine makes every search matter.

We just celebrated Earth Day, but our efforts to protect the environment should be improving year-round. When you use this eco-friendly search engine, you can pull plastic from the ocean with every search.

The plastic pollution problem

Plastic pollution is a well-known problem, and little is being done to stop it. The world produces millions of tons of plastic every year, and 91 percent of it doesn’t make it to a recycling facility1. Most plastic only goes through one use before landing in the garbage, which then accumulates in landfills and our oceans.

It has even created the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which is a massive, floating island of trash and plastic in the Pacific Ocean. It’s larger than the state of Texas! Many ocean animals mistake the plastic for food, so they die and wash ashore with stomachs full of plastic.

However, OceanHero is working to reduce the number of plastic products in our oceans.

How OceanHero works

The team at OceanHero recognizes that a large amount of improperly-discarded plastic comes from those in extreme poverty near rivers and oceans. These areas don’t have proper waste collection systems, so they dispose of their garbage in the environment.

This eco-friendly search engine offers to pay those in extreme poverty, who often live on less than one U.S. dollar a day, to collect plastic waste. The company can pay these people through the income they receive from online ads.

On average, every five searches on OceanHero provides enough income to remove the equivalent of one plastic bottle from the ocean2.

OceanHero partnered with PlasticBank to provide a place for plastic to go. Those that collect the ocean-bound plastic can trade it in for pay at collection centers in Indonesia, Haiti, the Philippines, and soon in Brazil. PlasticBank then recycles the plastic into Social Plastic3 and uses it for new products that promote sustainable living.

Those that have already been using this ocean-saving search engine have already made a difference. OceanHero launched at the end of September 2019, and they have already removed hundreds of thousands of plastic products from the ocean. PlasticBank started in 2013 and has collected millions of pounds of plastic since then.

Make the switch to an eco-friendly search engine

Even if you can’t physically get out and clean the environment yourself, you can make a difference from the comfort of your home. Make OceanHero your default browser, and start fighting plastic pollution every time you search the web.
